ReadyHarbour Roast SupplySample data, fictional

Rendered from the template's own layout with made-up numbers for Harbour Roast Supply, a company that doesn't exist.

What it answers

  1. How are sales doing this period against the same period last year?
  2. Which product categories and regions are growing?
  3. Who are our biggest customers, and how are the reps doing?
  4. How do I get a proper date table and year-on-year measures without learning DAX this week?
  5. What should my sales data look like before I load it into Power BI?

What's in the kit

SheetWhat it does
Sample data workbook (.xlsx)Seven Excel tables: FactSales (2,000 order lines), DimDate, DimProduct, DimCustomer, DimRegion, DimRep and Targets, plus a README sheet. The company is a made-up Harbour Roast Supply. Use it to build first, then swap in your own.
DAX measures (.dax text file)34 measures, each with a one-line comment and the number format to give it, and a DimDate table in DAX if you prefer that to the sheet. Written for Power BI Desktop.
Theme (.json)Colours and text styles for the report. Import it under View > Themes > Browse for themes.
Build guide (PDF, 6 pages)Loading the tables, the relationships, marking the date table, pasting the measures, applying the theme, the four pages with the fields to use, and pointing the report at your own data.
README.txtWhat is in the kit and the quick steps.
FormatStarter kit (.zip): sample data workbook, theme, DAX measures, build guide. For Power BI Desktop (Windows, free). There is no ready-made .pbix or .pbit in this version.

Plugging in your own data

Build it once on our sample data so you can see it work. Then point it at yours:

  1. 1

In Power BI Desktop, choose Get data > Excel workbook, open the sample workbook and tick all seven tables.

  2. 2

Create the relationships the guide lists, and mark DimDate as the date table.

  3. 3

Paste the measures from the .dax file, one at a time, then import the theme.

  4. 4

Build the four pages by following the guide.

  5. 5

To use your own data, change the source in Power Query (Home > Transform data > Data source settings). Keep the table and column names and press Refresh.

Probably not for you if

  • You want to open a finished report and press Refresh. In this version you build the pages, with the guide.
  • You're on a Mac with no Windows machine to hand. Power BI Desktop only runs on Windows.
  • Your team doesn't use Power BI. The Excel Sales Performance Dashboard does most of this without a new tool.

Questions people ask about this one

Why a kit and not a ready-made file?

Because a Power BI report file has to be built and checked inside Power BI Desktop on Windows, and this version is the parts without it: the data model, the measures, the theme and a guide. Building the pages yourself also means you know how every visual works when someone asks.

Do I need a Power BI Pro licence?

Not to build it. Power BI Desktop is free. You need Pro or Premium Per User to publish it to the Power BI Service and share it with colleagues there.

Can it connect to Shopify, HubSpot or a database?

Power BI can. The guide uses an Excel workbook as the source; swapping it for a CSV folder, a SQL table or a connector is a Power Query change. If you want us to do that part, that's a template tune-up, from €290.

How much DAX do I need to know?

Enough to paste. Each measure in the file has a one-line comment saying what it does and which number format to give it.

Have the measures been tested?

The measures are written for Power BI Desktop but we haven't run them in every setup. If one shows an error in your model, check the table and column names against the guide and tell us.
