KPI Starter Lite is free, and we don't ask for your email
A real Excel file, built the way all our templates are. Open it, read the Read me, paste your own numbers over ours. If you like how it works, the full KPI Starter does more of the same.
.xlsx, about 14 KB, no macros. Downloads straight away. We don't ask who you are.
Free to use in your own work, and to share the charts it makes. Please don't resell or re-upload the file; point people to this page instead.

An invented garden-supply shop. Its numbers are in the file so you can see it working.
Three tabs
| Sheet | What it does |
|---|---|
| Dashboard | Pick a month from the drop-down. Six KPIs (revenue, costs, gross margin, new customers, orders and average order value), each with that month, the change on the month before, the change against the year-to-date average, your target and a status word. A year-to-date strip, and two charts: revenue against costs, and new customers by month. |
| Data | One Excel table, twelve months down, seven columns across. Revenue, costs, new customers and orders are yours to type; average order value and gross margin work themselves out. Our fictional numbers are in there; paste yours over them. |
| Read me | Three steps to plug in your data, what the full version adds, which Excel versions it suits, and the licence. |
| Format | .xlsx, about 14 KB, no links to other files. |
Your numbers in, four steps
- 1
Download and open the file. If Excel shows a yellow Protected View bar, click Enable Editing; Excel does that to any downloaded file.
- 2
On Data, paste your twelve months over the mint-shaded columns: Month, Revenue, Costs, New customers, Orders. Dates are the first of each month, oldest at the top. The grey columns are formulas; leave them.
- 3
On Dashboard, type your own targets into the mint Target column. Costs count as a ceiling, everything else as a floor.
- 4
Pick a month next to the word Month. The six readouts, the changes and the year-to-date strip all follow. The charts always show the full year.

Will it open?
| App and version | Works? | Notes | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows | |||
| Excel for Microsoft 365 | Yes | ||
| Excel 2021 | Yes | ||
| Excel 2019 | Yes | Excel 2019: fine. The formulas stick to SUMIFS, INDEX and MATCH, nothing that needs dynamic arrays. | |
| Excel 2016 | Partly | Excel 2016: should open and calculate. Some chart formatting may look different. | |
| Mac | |||
| Excel for Mac (Microsoft 365) | Yes | Excel for Mac (Microsoft 365): fine. Nothing in the file uses Power Pivot or macros, which is what usually breaks on a Mac. | |
| Browser | |||
| Excel for the web | Partly | Excel for the web: opens, calculates, slicers and drop-downs work. Editing gets slower in the bigger tabs. | |
- Excel for the web and Google Sheets open it too. The table and the charts may look a little different there.
