Rendered from the template's own layout with made-up numbers for Verdella Home, a company that doesn't exist.

What it answers

  1. How much money do we need to raise, and when does it run out?
  2. When do we break even on EBITDA, if these assumptions hold?
  3. What happens to cash if we hire three people six months earlier?
  4. Does the balance sheet actually balance?
  5. Which assumption moves the result most?
  6. How do I show the board the plan without walking them through 60 columns?

What's in the file

SheetWhat it does
Read meWhat it is, seven steps to use it, a guide to each tab, the colour code (mint cells are inputs, grey cells are formulas), the limits, the no-advice line, licence and support.
AssumptionsThe only tab with inputs. Start month, currency and tax rate; the opening balance sheet; receivable, payable and inventory days; two revenue streams (price, price change, month-one units, growth, cost of goods); salary increase and a 12-row headcount plan; eight overhead lines; eight equipment purchases; three equity rounds; two loans.
RevenueUnits, price, revenue and cost of goods for each of the two streams, month by month.
HeadcountFull-time equivalents per role by month, payroll cost per role with social charges, and payroll by department.
OpexPayroll by department, plus the non-payroll overhead lines.
Capex & fundingEquipment purchases, depreciation, net fixed assets, equity raised and the loan schedules.
P&LRevenue by stream down to net income, monthly for 60 months, with tax carrying losses forward and a Year 1 to 5 roll-up on the right.
Balance sheetAn opening column and 60 month-ends, with year-end columns.
Cash flowIndirect method: net income, depreciation and working-capital changes, then capex, equity and loans, to closing cash. Net burn and runway (capped at 36 months).
ChecksTRUE or FALSE for each month: the balance sheet balances, balance sheet cash equals cash-flow cash, revenue ties to the revenue build, payroll ties out, and fixed assets and loans aren't negative. Cash below zero and unassigned payroll show as warnings.
SummaryA flag that says whether all integrity checks pass, a five-year table (revenue, growth, margins, EBITDA, net income, capex, cash, debt, headcount, equity raised), key points such as the lowest cash and the first month cash goes negative, and four charts.
Format.xlsx, no macros, no circular references, sheets unprotected. 60 monthly columns plus Year 1 to 5 roll-ups. The sample company is a made-up Verdella Home.

Plugging in your own data

Work through the Assumptions tab top to bottom. Everything else follows.

  1. 1

Set the start month, currency and tax rate, then the opening balance sheet.

  2. 2

Describe your revenue: two streams, each a price and month-one units, with growth and cost of goods.

  3. 3

List your team by role, department, salary and start and end month.

  4. 4

Add overheads, equipment purchases, equity rounds and loans.

  5. 5

Read the Checks tab. Every row should say TRUE; the Summary shows one flag for all of them.

  6. 6

    Read the Summary.

  7. 7

To compare cases, change one input at a time and save a copy of the file for each.

What support covers
Support covers how the template works and anything that's broken. Rebuilding it around a different data structure is custom work, and we're happy to quote for that.

Probably not for you if

  • You need a model built on your actual historic accounts for a bank or a due-diligence process. We do that as custom modelling, from €1,500.
  • Your revenue is subscriptions with churn and expansion. The SaaS model handles that properly.
  • You want IFRS or local GAAP reporting. It's a planning model; statutory accounts are another job.
  • Startup Finance Pack

Also in the Startup Finance Pack: 3 templates for €159 instead of €187.

Questions people ask about this one

Can I enter historic months?

Not as a separate actuals section. Start the model at the current month and put today's balances in as the opening balance sheet on Assumptions.

Are there scenarios?

There's no scenario switch. Change one input at a time, read the Summary, and save a copy of the file for each case you want to keep.

Does it do French tax?

It applies one corporate tax rate you choose, and carries losses forward against later profits. It doesn't model tax credits such as CIR or local rules. Ask your accountant for those numbers.

Can I add a third revenue stream?

The layout has two streams. A third is a change to the file, and a template tune-up if you'd like us to do it, from €290.

Will investors accept it?

We can't say what any investor will accept. It's a standard three-statement layout that balances; what makes it credible is your assumptions.
